WILD WEST VETERINARY CONFERENCE VETERINARY TECHNICIAN ACADEMY
The WWVTA encompasses four Core Modules, two days each of lectures and workshops, building on each other. Our goal is to provide you with the framework and study materials that along with your practical in-clinic experience will enhance your technical skills and knowledge. The Wild West Scientific Committee has designed these Core Modules to assist Veterinary Technicians in preparing for their state certification. Each module is limited to 25 students, allowing for interaction with your instructor and fellow students. Box lunches are provided each day and a “working dinner” will be held on Wednesday evening to facilitate networking as well as further your education. In 2007 the first two modules were launched and in 2008 module 3 & 4 will added to complete the curriculum of the Veterinary Technician Academy. Succeeding years will contain all the modules. Technicians will return each year for four years to complete the Academy. Returning technicians will be given priority in registration.
MODULE 1
Module 1 lays the groundwork for providing the BEST care for each and every patient. We focus on yearly wellness care and nutrition to prevent disease and ensure quality and quantity of life. We include behavior in our first module as it is still the number one reason pets are relinquished. The more we understand about what our patients are telling us, the better able we are to meet their needs.
MODULE 2
Module 2 focuses on basic patient assessment and nursing skills. We build on those skills during an overview of anesthesia and anesthetic emergencies. The second part of module 2 is hands on surgical preparation, including aseptic technique, pack preparation and overview of small animal dentistry.
MODULE 3
Module 3 builds heavily on the previous modules and focuses on advanced diagnostics and disease processes. Gain hands on experience during the urinalysis and cytology workshops. Learn about parasites, hosts, viruses and vectors and how they affect your patients...and how they can possibly infect you.
MODULE 4
Module 4 is for the advanced student. It focuses on triage, fluid therapy, and cardiology. We apply these materials in a hands-on CPCR workshop. The final day brings the four module Academy full circle. We will help you to learn recognize the symptoms of fatigue and burn out in this highly emotional field. We will make sure that you obtain the skills to take care of yourself so that you can take care of your patients and their humans for a very long time.
